The Economist: Karpal was rare gem of Malaysian politics

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 — Since his shocking death yesterday, the late Karpal Singh has been called “friend” by many that others would have thought to be irreconcilable foes.

At an emotive scene at the lawmaker’s home in Penang hours after his death, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin consoled a distraught Gobind Singh Deo, Karpal’s second son, when he went to pay his respects to the family.

Before that, contemporary and regular rival Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu had described the Bukit Gelugor MP as “good friend”, despite regularly crossing swords with Karpal when he had still been MIC president.

“Karpal Singh, who died in a car accident in the early hours of April 17th at the age of 74, was a rarity in the venomous world of Malaysian politics: a man respected by many of his opponents as well as those on his own side,” according to an obituary by The Economist today.

In the tribute titled “Burning Bright”, it noted that once-bitter rivals have lined to honour the man known as the “Tiger of Jelutong”, even those who tasted the acerbic sting of his tongue.

The business weekly pointed out that this included Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who was among the earliest to offer his sympathies to Karpal’s family.

“In politics, he was an implacable leader; in law, a committed advocate,” the prime minister said in a brief statement issued by his office.

“At this difficult time, our thoughts are with the families of those who have died in the accident. I extend my deepest condolences to them. We pray that the other passengers make a full recovery,” Najib added.

Karpal’s popularity was also not solely due to his courage and tenacity, The Economist said. Instead, it was the veteran lawmaker’s dignity, modesty, humour and courtesy that turned foes into friends, begrudging or otherwise.

But the weekly also made pains to point out the outpouring of sympathy and friendship now was as rare as the man receiving it.

“It was also a reminder that, though his death has been greeted with respect and regret (some nasty political jibes notwithstanding), that is not how Malaysia’s opposition politicians are treated when alive.

Karpal, 74, was killed after the Toyota Alphard MPV he was travelling in crashed following a collision with a lorry along the North-South Highway near Gopeng, Perak at about 1.10am yesterday.

Karpal, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was killed on the spot together with his long-time assistant, Michael Cornelius.

Karpal will receive a state funeral in Penang this Sunday.

Bahagian 4: Harmoni, tolenrasi dan kepercayaan diantara semua rakyat Malaysia tanpa mengira kaum dan agama

Seorang pemimpin yang inginkan kuasa untuk penyelewangan akan memecah-belahkan rakyat dan seorang pemimpin yang inginkan kuasa untuk berkhidmat akan menyatukan rakyat. Sejak kebelakangan ini rakyat Malaysia telah dibubuh pemikiran cetek untuk memainkan perasaan ekstrem kebencian, tidak harmoni diantara kaum dan agama. Malaysia adalah sebuah Negara berbilang kaum dengan melayu-islam menjadi majority lebih daripada 60% di kalangan rakyat Malaysia. Pemimpin yang bermasalah, demi untuk mengekalkan kuasa telah menggunakan strategi “pecah dan perintah” dikalangan rakyat Malaysia.

…di samping menyemaikan ketidakpercayaan dan syak-wasangka diantara masyarakat dan agama. Parti komponen yang berbeza dalam barisan yang sama telah memainkan isu kebencian diantara masyarakat dengan parti MCA dalam Barisan Nasional yang terus menghina undang undang Islam dan nilai-nilai Negara berkebajikan yang berlandaskan Islam yang diperjuangkan oleh PAS (satu ahli dalam Pakatan Rakyat) di kalangan kaum cina. Sementara pada waktu yang sama, parti UMNO dan rakan seperjuangan PERKASA dalam Barisan Nasional menaburkan sentiment ekstrem dan penghinaan pada bangsa dan agama lain di kalangan kaum melayu  jika masyarakat melayu menyokong  ahli Pakatan Rakyat yang lain seperti DAP dan PKR.

My fellow Malaysian brothers and sisters,  5th May 2013, a day when all Malaysian voters determine the next leadership of our nation. There are 5 issues that we can all ponder on with our mind, heart and conscience when casting our votes this 5th May (505).

Part 4: Harmony, tolerance and trust between all Malaysians regardless of race and religion

A leader who wants power to abuse will divide the people and a leader who wants power to serve will unite the people. Malaysians of late have been sowed with seeds of hatred, racial disharmony and fed with extreme racial and religious sentiments. Malaysia is multiracial nation with muslim-malay made up a majority of over 60% of the country’s population.  It seemed that tainted leaders who are on the brink losing power continue to resort to “divide and conquer” strategy.

…sowing mistrust between communities and religions.  Different parties in the same coalition incite hatred between communities with one party (namely MCA) in Barisan Nasional insulting Islamic laws and Islamic view of welfare/benevolent  state as suggested by PAS  (a member of Pakatan Rakyat) among chinese communities while another party (namely UMNO and ally Perkasa) in Barisan Nasional inciting distrust and insults on other religions among muslim-malay communities if they support other Pakatan Rakyat members of DAP and PKR.

Amaran terhadap mengundi (PAS) Pakatan Rakyat yang akan merosakkan bangsa dengan sembahyang di gereja, sekaligus menghina agama Kristian yang akan menghancurkan negara. (Warning against voting for (PAS) Pakatan Rakyat which will destroy the nation, religion and race by seeing future generations praying in churches, thus insulting the Christian faith of destroying the country)

Amaran terhadap mengundi (DAP) Pakatan Rakyat yang  akan  mengadai hak bukan  bukan-Islam di Johor seperti di Kelantan, dimana MCA/ BN menuduh rakyat Kelantan yang 95% terdiri Melayu memilih kerajaan negeri diterajui PAS untuk menindas orang bukan Islam sekaligus menghina nilai-nilai Islam. (Warning against voting for (DAP) Pakatan Rakyat which will turn Johor into another Kelantan, where MCA/BN accuse the people of Kelatan whom 95% are muslim-Malay of electing a state government led by PAS to oppress the non-muslim there, thus insulting Islamic values in the state.

Bahagian 2: Menjunjung semangat demokrasi

Index Demokrasi  2011 dilaporkan oleh Unit  “The Economist”  dalam 167 negara, Malaysia berada di tangga 71, sama dengan Zambia dan di dalam index ini, Malaysia berada dalam kategori “Demokrasi cacat”. Walaupun Malaysia mengadakan pilihanraya pada setiap 5 tahun, pilihanraya Malaysia masih tidak cukup bersih dan adil.

Gabungan Piliharan Raya yang Bersih dan adil atau gabungan BERSIH merupakan satu respon kepada “Demokrasi Cacat” Malaysia. Gabungan BERSIH telah mengadakan himpunan besar sehingga ratusan ribu orang di seluruh dunia terutamanya pada Julai 2011 dan April 2012 minta pilihanraya yang bersih dan adil.

Walaupun Suruhanjaya Pilihanraya berjanji untuk memperbaiki system pilihanraya di Malaysia, pilihanraya masih mengalami kontroversi seperti senarai pengundi yang dipertikaikan, pengundi hantu, pemberian IC untuk undi seperti yang dibincangkan pada Suruhanjaya Siasatan Diraja di Sabah kebelakangan ni dan masalah dakwat kekal terkini.

Adakah kamu ingat Auntie Bersih? Kenapa Makcik ini keluar untuk disembur air pemedih mata?

Part 2: Preservation and respect for democracy

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index 2011 ranking of 167 countries, Malaysia was ranked 71, tied with Zambia and under this index, Malaysia is also categorized as a “Flawed Democracy”. Despite holding elections at a regular interval, Malaysian elections are still far from clean and fair. 

This “Flawed Democracy” has prompted the BERSIH coalition- a coalition for clean and fair elections in Malaysia. The BERSIH Coalition has held mass rallies of tens of thousands to hundred of thousands across the world in the past, notably in July 2011 and April 2012 demanding for clean and fair elections. 

Despite some reforms pledged by the Election Commission, the elections are still marred by several contentious issues such as fraudulent electoral roll, phantom voters, ICs for vote in Sabah as revealed by the recent Royal Commission of Inquiry and latest the indelible ink fiasco (happened with the advanced voters- mainly involving security forces and their spouse voted on 30th April).

Remember those times? Remember “Auntie Bersih”…why would she choose to be sprayed with chemical-laced water?

There is no turning back now despite Prime Minister Najib Razak's continued delay for the 13th General Elections. Regardless whether the elections are happening in March, April, May or June 2013, we are ready for change. Rhetorics and slogans of "stability over chaos", "1 Malaysia", "Transformation" here and there and in fact everyday, everyhour to almost everyminute on mainstream media since the dawn of Najib's administration in April 2009 has not yield any significant improvements in the country's corruption, racial and religious harmony just to name a few.

Nevertheless, thank you Prime Minister Najib Razak of leading the country in the past 4 years and now we are ready to herald into dawn of a new federal government by Pakatan Rakyat under the leadership of a new Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim!

Sabah's security and sovereignty breached?

Malaysia's authority and intelligence agency first alleged that there was an attempt on south korean superstar Psy's life during his special appearance in BN Penang Chinese New Year open house following a "yee sang toss" embarrassment that the Prime Minister Najib Razak, ministers and BN leaders had to wait for over 5 minutes on 11th February 2013.

 

Then the Malaysia's immigration department detained and deported an Australian Senator on 16th February 2013 alleging that the Australian lawmaker Xenophon tarnished the country's image for his "authoritarian" remarks of Malaysian Government handling of the BERSIH 2.0 rally on 28th April 2012.

 

However a security situation has emerged in Sabah recently with 100 armed men in Lahad Datu. Eventhough I have not follow the situation closely but the latest call by leader of DAP Parliamentarians YB Lim Kit Siang of an urgent Parliament session and Sabah State Assembly session warrants attention of all Malaysians, especially Sabahans on our country's sovereignty and the security and the safety of Malaysians, particularly Sabahans.

Jamalul Kiram III, who claims to be ruler of the now defunct Sulu Sultanate, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that he authorised the ‘incursion’ and that his men would remain in Lahad Datu as long as needed.

Jamalul said the group, led by his younger brother crown prince Agbimuddin Kiram, would remain in Sabah for “as long as necessary” in their bid to reclaim the state, which was formerly a territory of the Sulu Sultanate.

Regardless of the ruling government's preparation and preoccupation with the coming 13th General Election and their all-out in defending their seat of power, they must not forget or be lacking in anyway to protect the sovereignty and security of Malaysia.

Where are UMNO/ BN Leaders when "Bapa Malaysia" Tunku Abdul Rahman is defamed by Mahathir's allegation?

Recent comments made by our former Prime Minister (PM) Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed who was the fourth Malaysian PM from 1981 to 2003 regarding the on-going Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the issue of "Citizenships for Votes" in Sabah (an  Eastern Malaysian State in Borneo Island) where illegal immigrants were given citizenships allegedly in exchange for votes during elections.

In the online news portal, the former premier admitted that citizenships were given to foreigners in Sabah but emphasized that it was done within the law. (Dr M admits citizenships given out in Sabah, says nothing illegal).

Quoted:-

[Tun Dr. Mahathir] He also reminded reporters of the country’s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, claiming that he gave out citizenships to those who were unqualified to receive it. “One should also look back and remember that Tunku Abdul Rahman was worse than me, he gave one million citizenships to people who are not qualified and were not even tested.” “Why is it when he does it, it is not wrong, and when I do it, it’s wrong?” he asked. Dr Mahathir, the country’s longest serving prime minister who was in power from 1981 to 2003, has been accused of spearheading the so-called “Project IC”, in which citizenships were allegedly given to immigrants in exchange for their votes.

Till today, a few days after Dr. Mahathir made the comment and attempt to defame to Tunku Abdul Rahman (Malaysian first Prime Minister who responsible directly in negotiation to acquire independence of Malaya from Britain in 1957, Malaya formed Malaysia together with Sarawak and Sabah in 1963), no one leader from the current ruling coalition of UMNO/ BN spoke a word to defend our "Father of Independence" Tunku Abdul Rahman from the attempt of defamation by former premier Dr. Mahathir. (Tunku Abdul Rahman was also from the party of the current ruling coalition of UMNO/ BN). Dr. Mahathir, instead of furnishing facts and proof that his actions were legal, he resorted to accuse a person that can no longer reply or clarify which is shocking and appaling.

No ONE from UMNO/ BN defended Tunku! The first and foremost leader to defend Tunku is no other than Democratic Action Party's (DAP) leader, Lim Kit Siang (DAP is a member of the opposition pact of Pakatan Rakyat along with PKR and PAS)!

Latest news reported that Dr. Mahathir has suggested a RCI to look into Tunku's grant of citizenships during independence days. Dr. Mahathir continous defamatory allegations against Tunku have been more unbecoming for a statesman like Dr. Mahathir where Tunku is no longer here to clarify or response (Tunku Abdul Rahman passed away in 1990, peace be with him).

No ONE from UMNO/ BN defended Tunku! Where are all the leaders? or do they agree with Dr. Mahathir that Tunku Abdul Rahman is worse by giving citizenships to unqualified people? or they couldn't be bothered because Tunku no longer has influence on their political careers? or afraid that their political careers will be ended if they go against Dr. Mahathir? and their own political survival are much more important than upholding truth, complete disregard the history of our nation-building and defend our Father of Independence from being defamed?

Tunku Abdul Rahman must be extremely sad if he is still alive today that his contribution to independence and his labourous effort of nation-building have been completely disregarded by a wild  accusation of being worse to grant citizenships to unqualified people!

We need leaders to restore truth and return our nation-building effort into the right path, a path that Tunku Abdul Rahman seeked when he declared "Merdeka" (Independence) in Stadium Merdeka in 1957.

and the leaders that we need are clearly cannot be found in the current UMNO/ BN leaders BUT found in Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders like Lim Kit Siang.

The first response quoted from Lim Kit Siang's post regarding Dr. Mahathir's allegation of Tunku:

It is sad and tragic for Malaysia that the longest-serving Prime Minister [Dr. Mahathir] in Malaysia does not understand that “Two wrongs do not make a right”. Sadder and even more tragic, there are no “two wrongs” here as it is utterly cowardly, disgusting and contemptible on Mahathir’s part to allege that Tunku had committed a more heinous crime and treason than him with regard to Project IC or Project M.

2. 82-Day Countdown to 13GE: Najib should clear the name of Tunku, his father Tun Razak and one million citizens of Merdeka generation from Mahathir’s defamation that Tunku had given citizenship to one million unqualified people

Is Najib [Current Malaysian Prime Minister] implying support for Mahathir’s defamation of Tunku in giving one citizenship to one million unqualified people – which would not only implicate Bapa Malaysia but also Najib’s father, Tun Razak? Let Najib without delay clear the name not only of Tunku but also his father Tun Razak and openly dissociate himself from Mahathir’s defamation of Tunku, Tun Razak and one million citizens of the Merdeka generation.

Sharifah Zohra Jabeen- "Listen, listen, listen" woman

The infamous speaker panelist in a student's forum at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has sparked an internet phenomenon in Malaysia. The panelist Sharifah got her infamous nickname: "Listen, listen, listen woman" derived her name when she berated second year law student Bawani KS with a staggering 11 times of "Listen" [she then pulled the microphone away from the student] and followed by a 7 times of "Let me speak". The speaker Sharifah is an NGO activist (President of Suara Wanita 1Malaysia) aligned with the ruling coalition of Barisan Nasional government's tagline of 1Malaysia.

I also couldn't agree more with a comment [scarecrow2] on The Malaysian Insider's news

Disgusted by the conduct of Sharifah Zohra Jabeen

An undergraduate student, Bawani from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) asked in the student forum:
"Why Malaysia can't have free education from pre-school to university first degree?" (She provided example with countries like Argentina and Cuba).

The speaker at the forum, Sharifah Zohra Jabeen answered:
"Don't equate Malaysia with other countries, if you equate Malaysia to other countries, what are you doing in Malaysia? Go to Cuba, go to Argentina, go to Libya, go everywhere." 

in which the speaker Sharifah added a statement refering to Bawani:
"Every human in here has had education, and today I am very sorry that somehow you have proven that you the very least of pendidikan [education]..."

Sharifah then gave a vast examples of problems faced the animal kingdom, cattle, goats slaughtered, sharks killed for their fins and asked Bawani:
 "Have you ever fought for animal rights?"

Sharifah add on:
"If you are not happy, you are very much suitable to go to another university!"

For the past few decades, the authorities had placed numerous obstacles for opposition parties to gather en masse, citing security concerns and traffic as the usual reasons.

The People's Uprising Rally (KL112), in keeping with its revolutionary theme, saw the authorities essentially giving opposition parties free passage to do almost whatever they wanted.

Obviously, there was a political gamble at play in view that the 13th general election is around the corner. Malaysiakini examines who had most to gain from this high stakes gamble.

WINNERS

Pakatan Rakyat

Even before the rally was concluded, photographs of an overflowing Stadium Merdeka had gone viral over the Internet, proving to undecided voters that the coalition does enjoy mass public support and is a legitimate candidate for Putrajaya.

What Pakatan needs to do now is to take advantage of momentum and spread the central message of the rally - the ten point declaration - throughout the country.

Civil society

Several key civil society movements, especially for environmental causes, have grown exponentially in strength over the past years and command a sizeable following, which was displayed during KL112.

Evolving from the initial not-in-my-backyard (Nimby) philosophy, Malaysia's various green movements have now gone national as people begin to recognise the importance of civil society in shaping the nation.

Ismail Omar

In the run up to KL112, the police released several statements in an accommodating tone, to the extent of promising that they had set a ‘zero casualty' target.

The whole time, inspector-general of police Ismail Omar didn't say a single word, leaving the talking to his subordinates.

Had things turned sour, Ismail would have taken the rap as usual. But now, he will be remembered for the fact that his men stayed true to their word.

Traders near Stadium Merdeka

Save for one stall owner selling gas masks, traders who set up shop around Stadium Merdeka were all smiles because they were enjoying brisk sale of T-shirts, drinks and food.

Previously, one group of traders claimed Bersih 3.0 had cost them great losses. Perhaps they should sharpen their eye for opportunities.

LOSERS

Najib Abdul Razak

In the past, Pakatan wasn't able to fill half of the 25,000 capacity MBPJ Stadium in Kelana Jaya. Was the prime minister hoping for the same this time round, so he could ridicule them later?

Internally, Umno die-hards are probably curious to know why their president allowed the event to proceed when it could have been dealt with, by many old and proven methods.

More importantly, the public will also be questioning Najib and his party on whether they can pull off a similar spectacle without paying the participants.

Umno and BN

From sodomy to a Christian conspiracy to eroding Malay rights, Umno and BN component parties have slung mud in every shape and size at Pakatan since 2008.

If the turnout was an indicator of reputation, nothing appears to be sticking.

Mainstream media organisations

Save for Sinar Harian and all the Chinese media organisations, the focus was not on turnout nor the message of the rally but the various infractions chalked up by the rally organisers.

Unfortunately for them, videoclips and photographs - in particularly an aerial shot by AFP capturing the scene in and around Stadium Merdeka - are being widely circulated online, helping the public to have a clearer understanding of what transpired.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update on the at least 100,000 strong and enthusiastic crowd who gathered at Malaysian Opposition's Pakatan Rakyat- Himpunan Kebangkitan Rakyat in Stadium Merdeka 12th January 2013.

Remember these pictures do not include the people in blocked view. Imagine the size of the crowd, 100,000 people at least within in the stadium or outside.

2013: Dawn of Hope for a better Malaysia

Hi everyone,

Frequent readers of my blog are most likely convinced that I am a pro-opposition blogger in Malaysia. As a matter of fact, I believe in equal rights to be heard. Why? Everyone in Malaysia must agree that the main stream media in Malaysia whether TV stations, Radio stations or Newspaper agencies are owned or have direct linked with the ruling political party of Malaysia, "Barisan Nasional" or "National Front" who have since ruled the country on federal level since independence in 1957.

Federal opposition leaders or parties or federal opposition ruled- state governments are being demonized on the daily basis by main stream media in Malaysia reports literally that "no good" can come from opposition parties (Pakatan Rakyat or "People's Alliance")

Everyday Pakatan Rakyat leaders and Pakatan Rakyat ruled-state governments of Kelantan, Kedah, Penang and Selangor are being painted as "no good" can come from them and their state governments. Therefore, as the founding tagline and reason for this blog, I would like to provide an additional alternative voice for real issues concerning the people and also to presents views on Pakatan Rakyat in a fairer way. So, Barisan Nasional government does not need additional media coverage or attention from this blog to promote it's propoganda, "promised-fulfilled" campaigns and slogans.

Since March 2008 when Barisan Nasional government lost their 2/3 majority in Parliamentary seats for the first time and also lost the mandate to run the states of Penang, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan and Selangor. It was a political tsunami that shocked everyone, many believe that Barisan Nasional government will repent and be serious in good governance but from 2008 to 2012, we do not see enough commitment and real changes to deal of fundamental issues like corruption, education, media freedom (where rankings got worse in the past few years). Racial and religions issues were played up and more extreme than before, human rights got worse. Budget deficits continue to run high and Nation's debt continue to increase from huge to colossal and illicit financial outflow ranked 3rd in the world!

Can we really believe that all these bad ratings, rankings and shaky financial status are the results of the opposition parties in action? 

I am not saying that "no good" has come from the Barisan Nasional (BN) government, in fact the BN government did alot to develop the nation, did what most of the other governments of the world did, like building schools, hospitals, roads, housing for the poor...etc but isn't that what all governments should do? What I am worried about is the amount of things that a government should not do like abuse of power, dictatorship, unfairness, corruption, leakages...etc?

So I believe that the BN Government did alot what any other governments in the world SHOULD DO but I am also acutely worry about the things that a government SHOULD NOT DO!

The DON'Ts are overwhelming the DOs of the BN Goverment, and it only got from bad to worse since 2008 to 2012.

Corruption - In the four-year Najib premiership, Malaysia’s Transparency International (TI) Corruption Perception Index (CPI) rankings sunk to the lowest depths in 18 years – No. 56 in 2009 and 2010, No. 60 in 2011 and No. 54 in 2012 as compared to the worst ranking of No. 23 under Mahathir and No. 47 under Abdullah – suggesting that corruption under the present Prime Minister is even worse than under all the previous Prime Ministers, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Razak, Tun Hussein, Tun Mahathir and Tun Abdullah.

No. 1 in per capita capital flight : Latest Global Finance Integrity report showed that on a per capita basis, Malaysia with a population of 28 million, is No. 1 in the world on illicit money outflow – whether in terms of black money siphoned out of the country for 2010, which is RM196.8 billion, or for the past decade (2000-2010), which is a whopping RM871 billion or equivalent to over RM31,000 for each of the country’s 28 million population.

Double-whammy of decline in maths and science standards by Malaysian students when compared with foreign countries well as with past batches – In TIMSS 2011 for eighth-grade students, Malaysia is ranked No. 26 with a score of 440 out of 1,000 for mathematics and even lower for science at No. 32 with a score of 426, both below the international average. They are also the worst scores for Malaysia in the four TIMSS 1999-2011, i.e. in maths dropping by 79 points from 519 in 1999 to 440 in 2011; in science, dropping by 66 points from 492 in 1999 to 426 points in 2011.

These are not signs of national transformation but national deformations.

Let 2013 end the national deformations and usher in an era of genuine national transformation for Malaysians by electing a new Pakatan Rakyat Malaysian government for the first time in 55 years.
